Using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, the ICVFX group (Spectre Studios, Big Picture, NEP, Agenda Studios) hosted the first public demonstrations of ‘Mandalorian-style’ LED volume technology in all of Australia to demonstrate its practical purposes.
Unreal Engine allows for the real-time rendering of entire CGi environments. With camera tracking data being fed in, UE4 can then generate the camera’s 3D perspective allowing for a completely virtual backdrop with real parallax to be captured in-camera without additional post-production VFX work.
Some of the affordances of the new tech are real-time practical lighting, simulated travel and even unplanned dynamic camera moves in a cgi environment!
I’m incredibly humbled to be one of the first and only colourists in Australia to have gotten the chance to work on footage captured in-volume!
